How to Source Obsolete Xilinx FPGA Components

Published: 2026-06-10 Author: CHIPFPGA Team Category: FPGA

Many Xilinx FPGA series, including the widely-used Spartan-3, Spartan-6 and Virtex-5 families, have long been discontinued. Yet thousands of industrial devices, telecom equipment and measurement instruments still rely on these components. For repair engineers and manufacturers maintaining legacy equipment, sourcing obsolete FPGAs becomes a critical challenge.

Why Does Xilinx Discontinue FPGAs?

Every semiconductor manufacturer follows a product lifecycle. Xilinx (now AMD) announces EOL (End of Life) 6-12 months before the last-time-buy date, after which production stops. Reasons are standard: migration to newer process nodes (28nm → 16nm → 7nm), declining demand, and high costs of maintaining older fabrication lines. After EOL, authorized channels no longer supply these components.

Where to Find Obsolete Xilinx FPGAs

The primary source for obsolete FPGAs is independent electronic component distributors. Unlike authorized channels, independent suppliers have access to inventory worldwide — from OEM excess stock to unsold production batches. CHIPFPGA maintains a stocking program for high-demand EOL Xilinx components.

How to Check EOL Status

The AMD/Xilinx website provides Product Lifecycle Status for every part number. Check for: LTB (Last Time Buy) — the last order date, and LTS (Last Time Ship) — the final shipment date. If both dates have passed, the component is only available through independent channels.

Alternative Replacements

Some EOL models have pin-compatible replacements in newer families. For example, Spartan-6 designs can migrate to Spartan-7 or Artix-7. However, such migration requires PCB redesign and re-certification — not always justified. In these cases, purchasing original EOL components through an independent supplier is the fastest route.

Authenticity Verification for EOL Components

With EOL components, authenticity verification is critical. CHIPFPGA performs multi-stage incoming inspection: visual marking verification, date code checking, test board validation, and pre-shipment photo reports. This eliminates the risk of counterfeit components.
